Last week, we chatted about how to decide whether the wine you’re about to open will benefit from some time to “breathe”.
In a lot of cases, a bit of air is good for wines. Especially if they’re young.
But, too much is never a good thing.
Exposing wine to oxygen over a long period of time causes oxidation and the deterioration of flavours and aromas. That’s why you should always enjoy your wine on the day (or no more than a couple of days after) you open it.
OR
Invest in one of the gadgets I mentioned in this blog post designed to prolong the life of your wine.
When I first posted that blog almost 3 years ago, I asked one of you lovely people to buy us one of the better options, the Coravin, for Christmas. Understandably, none of you came through with the goods! So, we had to treat ourselves. Which we did. And we couldn’t be more excited!
This nifty piece of equipment allows us to open Museum wines and keep them fresh as a daisy for three months! Yep… months. And for wines with corks… years after you first sample them.
How is it so?
(Before I go on, I should say I’m not getting paid by Coravin to say all this… we just love it. And I’ll get to exactly why in a sec.)
Coravin uses a specially designed non-coring needle that passes through corks without displacing cork material. Once the needle is removed, the cork simply expands back to its normal shape. As wine is extracted through the Needle, it is replaced with pure Argon gas, ensuring oxygen never touches the remaining wine, keeping it as fresh as the day it was bottled.
Brilliant!
But what about wines under screw cap (like most of ours!)?
Well, I’m glad you asked! Because they’ve thought of that too with a special cap that replaces the original screw cap closure. It features a silicone liner that can withstand fifty punctures by the needle before needing to be replaced.

A reason to be excited
That’s all great, but why has this little piece of equipment made us so happy?
Well, we love to share. And we love nothing more than sharing ALL of Rob’s wines with you.
So, now we can open some of our old and (in most cases) very rare Museum wines and share them with our members! And that’s good news for us AND you!
In the past, we opened these wines only when we had a special tasting event and could only share them with the handful of you able to make it on that particular day. Now we can have it available for up to 3 months!
And the best place to enjoy this new perk of being a member of the best wine club in town*…?
(*according to a survey of Somerled staff, members of the Moody family and a select handful of club members)
The Club Room
In fact, your new Club Room is the only way to enjoy a glass (or half glass) of our carefully curated selection of Museum wines. (Unless we’re feeling particularly generous “out the front”!)
Right now we have the following wines on offer…
- 2015 Chardonnay
- 2015 Shiraz
- 2016 Fume Blanc
- plus a 2005 Cabernet!
These will change regularly, though.
Choose from…
A table for up to 6 people in the Club Room
or
Exclusive use of the Private Den (max. 6 people)
And you too could be enjoying a glass of something special from Rob’s cellar in this gorgeous space designed just for you! Send me an email to book your spot now!
