A quick fix!

Vintage / Friday, March 12th, 2021

We’ve had a big week!

Massive vintage commitments, a fabulously busy long weekend at the Cellar Bar, the March Club pack release (and subsequent packing) and a bout of gastro for me (don’t worry… I haven’t been anywhere near Hahndorf, the Cellar Bar or your wine in a long time!).

So, you’re getting a quick one this week.

Send your complaints (and suggestions for future blog topics!) to… club@blog.somerled.com.au

In the meantime, here is a very quick recap of Rob’s week in the vineyard/winery…

Chardonnay

This year, Rob is getting half of the fruit for his 2021 Chardonnay from a vineyard in Balhannah… the same one he used for the 2020 Chardonnay (because the fires affected Kim Anderson’s vineyard in Charleston so badly). The other half is coming from Charleston.

On Wednesday night, despite 2mm of rain here in the Hills, the fruit from Balhannah was picked.

Rob was very happy with the juice. The final Baume was 12.3.

The rest of the Chardonnay fruit (from Charleston) was picked on Thursday night.

Rosé

This vintage half of the pinot noir fruit for our 2021 Rosé is coming from Paul Henschke’s vineyard in Summertown. The other half from Charleston.

A couple of weeks back we picked enough from Summertown to make the Sparkling. We went back in yesterday for the Rosé fruit.

A further tonne of pinot noir is being picked at Charleston as we speak.

Sauvignon Blanc

Our sauvignon blanc fruit at Charleston was looking amazing and was picked last night.

That’s the whites taken care of… Light Dry Red, Pinot Noir, Tempranillo and Shiraz still to come!!

But picking the fruit is the easy bit. Now Rob has to make it into wine. And with all the fruit coming off at once it made for a very long night at the winery for Rob last night.

When he wakes up, I’ll ask him all about it!
